What is poly?
Poly is a here a short form of polyamory. It basically means "many loves". For me, polyamory means that I am open to having or have had more than one sexual or romantic relationship at the same time. This is with consent and knowledge from all the involved so it is not the same as sleeping around.
Polyamory for me is based on consent, mutual respect and a will to clearly communicate one's boundaries and needs and to respect one's partner's needs.
Is polyamory the same as cheating?
No.
Being polyamorous and having more than one partner for sex and/or romance is something that is based on consent and knowledge from all involved partners. This can differ from partner to partner of course. Some prefer to have as much info as possible about their partner's partner, some are friends with them and some only want to know the basics.
But there is no sneaking, no secretive and most of all, no secrets.
Why not be monogamous and just be with one partner?
Not all people are fit for monogamy, same as not all people are fit for polyamory. It is very simple.
